Hello!
26 January 2010
Issue 6 :: Winter 2009/2010
It’s HERE! It’s FINALLY HERE!!
Well kids- you waited, and you waited… and then you waited some more.
So here it is- ISSUE 6 of messy magazine. We asked you for your best stuff- no theme this time- and you truly delivered. By now, perhaps you’ve fallen from that place where you were all jazzed about the new year. Hopefully you’re keeping up with your promises and still reaching toward your goals. Just in case you want a little look back to the year that used to be, we’re here with a little nostalgia from our fair 2009- and then some. Take a look inside and enjoy.
In addition to releasing the long-awaited issue, we have a tiny little announcement to make…
messy magazine will be partnering with the 34th Cleveland International Film Festival this year.
We are super excited to be a media sponsor again. Stay tuned to facebook, twitter and wait near your inboxes with bated breath- we’ll have information about films and other fun CIFF related dealings.
YOU can win vouchers to see some of the excellent programming in store this year- we’ll tell you how.
The 34th Cleveland International Film Festival runs from March 18-28, 2010. For more information, please visit http://clevelandfilm.org.

Microscopes and Megaphones

Big [BOX] 10 is upon us, ladies and gentlemen. And this weekend, you are in for a treat at Cleveland Public Theatre… Presented by Whisper to a Scream: a feminist performance art collective and directed by Maura Haas, Microscopes & Megaphones is a collaborative project that uses dance, theatre, audio and visual arts to explore “the problem that has no name” plaguing the modern woman today. With progress made in reproductive choice, education, the workplace and at home, the modern Western woman’s oppression manifests itself through subtlety, innuendo and the places you least expect.

“…in a most dangerous manner”
Curated by Steven Lam and Sarah Ross
January 29 – March 26, 2010

Opening reception:
Friday, January 29, 2010, 6-9:00 p.m.
We know there is plenty going on this Friday night, but THIS is something you don’t want to miss: New exhibitions opening at SPACES Gallery at 2221 Superior Viaduct.
“… in a most dangerous manner” serves as a working research archive that demonstrates how “economic crises” have often been used to restructure and restore class divisions. The exhibition seeks to recast current economic conditions as not quite a crisis, a temporal anomaly, nor a failure in governmental regulations, but as a cycle common to the last 150 years of American (and increasingly global) financial markets. Employing abstraction, metaphor, and narrative, the artists inject their work into current discussions surrounding economic recovery and stability, while imagining potential exits from this system.

We hope to continue to grow in 2010- and maybe switch some things up a bit. We hope you’ll stay along for the ride.

“We are not politicians. We can enforce no laws. However, we are a group of vigilantes, with artistic, fascinating comrades aplenty, and we vow to try our hardest to ensure that you are heard and entertained. We, the underpaid, inspired, overworked, creative, and intense can work together. We love this city and we know you secretly do, too. So we offer a soapbox, a platform, an outlet, a spotlight for you and yours. All we have to offer are these pages. These words, drawings, paintings, photos, and thoughts. This freedom. Hold on to it.”
